York’s presentation this year will focus on making a summer “cooler” using herbs and some creative vegetable carving.
York has been cooking his entire life, and became a Certified Chef four years ago. This year, he is one of three chefs in the state of Texas to qualify for the Texas Chef of the Year Award. The Award is presented by the American Culinary Federation, and he says two of the qualifications for being eligible including community involvement and being an all around “good egg.” This is apart from the fact of his rave reviews of the gourmet fare served in the Edom Bakery and Grill.
York’s community involvement this year, in conjunction with the ACF and the Edom Bakery, has focused on promoting mentorship and the culinary arts program in high schools in Canton, LaPoyner and Van.
His schedule this fall will include working on a program to promote healthy eating in an elementary school in Tyler. He and an associate have developed a program that involves one chef, one nutritionist and one farmer. It’s a version of show-and-tell involving what, why and how to eat better and promotes exercise.
Free samples and recipes are on the menu for this fourth workshop of the Summers Series offered by the Henderson County Master Gardeners. The workshops are cosponsored by the East Texas Arboretum and the TVCC Community Services department, and are free to the public.
